Related Programs

CARD-USF is administered through Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute's Division of Applied Research and Education Support that also includes several projects that are closely related to CARD. These projects are directly affiliated and include staff who contribute directly to CARD-USF functions.

Individualized Support Program (ISP)
The CARD-USF continued to work with the staff of the Individualized Support Program (ISP). The ISP, directed by Dr. Lise Fox, is a federally funded, intensive early intervention program that provides comprehensive support for very young children with significant challenges in behavior and communication development.

The fundamental goal of the project is to improve the current and future lives of the child and the child's family. This involves helping the child to develop communication, social and play skills, interests, and relationships to the fullest extent possible. ISP also assists the child's family to participate in the development and implementation of plans for the child's development and support.

As a model demonstration project, ISP has focused on a relatively small number of families in one county. CARD-USF and ISP are working cooperatively to infuse the salient service features of this model into CARD-USF practice and to offer these services to families of very young children across our entire 18-county catchment area. A more formal replication of the ISP model is also being conducted at the FSU-CARD in Tallahassee and the UF-CARD in Gainesville.

Statewide Training in Positive Behavioral Support
Work continued on the "State Training Team" project which has developed 12 modules on positive behavioral support. These materials provide the foundation content upon which training for teachers, related educational personnel, therapists, state agency personnel, and parents is based. During this past fiscal year, the project began to implement the training curriculum to develop local teams, thereby increasing local capacity to address the needs of individuals with significant challenges in communication and behavior.

Research and Training Center on Positive Behavioral Support (RTC)
The RTC, as part of a national effort affiliated with five other universities, develops strategies for resolving serious problem behaviors and conducts training in positive behavioral support.

At USF, research has been carried out in the areas of curriculum development, family, functional assessment, and comprehensive support programs. The resources of this project have enabled CARD to participate in intensive support efforts that can serve as models for training purposes.

Families as Teachers
CARD-USF staff launched the Families As Teachers project during the past fiscal year. Funded by the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, this project is a collaborative effort of the CARD-USF, the Family Network on Disabilities, and the USF medical school. The curriculum for this project focuses on the experiences of families with children with developmental disabilities and includes strategies for effective communication and the importance of parent/professional collaboration. During this past year, the project targeted Pediatric Residents as initial participants. During the next year, the project will be expanded to include medical school students, undergraduate and graduate nursing students, special education students, and students in the Department of Communication Sciences.

Family Network Project
Also new this past fiscal year was the Family Network Project, which is funded for three years by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. The project's goal is to provide families with the strategies that will promote positive child behavior, family cohesion, community participation and maintenance of desirable family routines, through positive behavioral support.
