2011-2012 Innovations in Developmental Disabilities Seminar Series

How Does Response to Intervention (RtI) Help
Students with Academics and Behavior?

WHEN: Wednesday, February 15, 2012 . . . Time: 11:30 am - 12:45 pm
WHERE: USF College of Behavioral and Community Sciences/FMHI (MHC Atrium Lobby)

This may be of value to families and educators who struggle with understanding Response to Intervention for both problem behavior and academics. Families, professionals, and students are welcome to attend.

DESCRIPTION: A Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a term used to describe an evidence-based model of schooling that uses data-based problem-solving to integrate academic and behavioral instruction and intervention.  The integrated instruction and intervention is delivered to students in varying intensities (multiple tiers) based on student need.  “Need-driven” decision-making seeks to ensure that district resources reach the appropriate students (schools) at the appropriate levels to accelerate the performance of ALL students to achieve and/or exceed proficiency.  The presentation will provide a brief context for what MTSS (aka RtI) is and why it is needed along with suggestions for parents and technical support personnel on how best to participate in MTSS implementation and/or practices at the school level.

PRESENTER(S): Brian T. Gaunt, Ph.D. is a graduate of USF’s doctoral program in School Psychology with a master’s degree in Behavior Analysis. He has worked the last 10 years as a pre-school consultant, PK-12 academic tutor, school psychologist, Schoollevel RtI Implementation Coach, State Regional Coordinator for PS/RtI Grant project, and as a the Inter-Project Coordinator between FLPBS and PS/RtI Projects. His current role assists the two projects’ merge into a comprehensive model of training and technical  assistance to all Florida school districts on the implementation and sustainability of a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) for students.

Free Autism Screening For Toddlers

The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida in Lee County, in partnership with the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to 36 months of age.

It is estimated that one in every 150 children is diagnosed with some form of ASD, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.

Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well.

The ASD screening is conducted by the Neurosciences Center at The Children’s Hospital, under the guidance of pediatric neurologist Jose Colon, MD, MPH, and pediatric psychiatrist Marianne Krouk, DO. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders.

A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, please call 239-985-3608.------ For Ages 15 Months through 4 years of age

Face Autism, Inc. is providing free autism/ASD screenings
to children 15 months through 4 years of age, within Sarasota/Manatee/Charlotte counties who show signs of autism/ASD.

The screenings will be performed by a certified Infant Toddler Developmental Specialist / certified Floortime Therapist. The tool used for the screening will be the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). If a child is at risk for autism/ASD, they will then be referred back to their pediatrician, pediatric neurologist, child psychologist, or developmental pediatrician for further evaluation/diagnosis. Early detection leads to early intervention.

Don’t wait and see. For more information go to http://www.face-autism.org or call 813-240-3044.
