The highlight of the 2002 Autism Awareness Month activities was the Put the ‘A’ in Autism Art Contest.” The purpose of the art contest was to encourage schools to increase autism awareness within their community and to give teachers materials to promote autism awareness in their schools. The rules for the contest required that each artist had to read the pamphlet I have a Friend with Autism and Guidelines for Using Person-First Language before beginning their entry.

Students throughout our 18 county catchment area participated. We received outstanding artwork from over 200 students in K-8th grades making the task of picking winners a very difficult one. Employees at the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute, Division of Applied Research and Educational Support, voted on the artwork that best represented what autism means.

Every child who took the time to draw a picture to raise awareness about autism was a winner in our eyes. Each child who participated received a commemorative pencil and certificate. Winners received a special certificate and award.
