CARD-PBS Demonstration Project Success Story

Brandon is a middle school student in St. Lucie County who had been exhibiting various problem behaviors that presented concerns to his family and his teacher. His PBS team, (consisting of his family and school staff including his teacher, the class behavior technician, the occupational therapist, and the district behavior analyst), were accepted into the CARD-PBS Demonstration project in the winter of 2001. The project took the team through four, two-hour training modules that were designed to support a team through the PBS process for a target individual with challenging behavior. The goal of the CARD-PBS process was to develop an effective behavior support plan based on functional behavior assessment data.

Brandon’s target behaviors included flopping, yelling, and grinding his teeth. Based on the data gathered by the team, Brandon’s purposes of his problem behavior appeared to be to get adult attention and/or to escape certain tasks. The team developed possible interventions to replace Brandon’s problem behavior with more appropriate behaviors that would gain him attention (touching adult hands and waiting for them to say “hello”) or allow him

a break from a task (using a “break stick” to initiate a break). As the interventions appeared to be successful, the team designed a monitoring plan to continue to provide ongoing assessment of the effectiveness of the plan.

Ann Rhoden-Rucker, the behavior analyst on the team, stated that the PBS model used with Brandon was highly effective in the following areas: (1) improving communication between home and school; (2) encouraging collaboration between all team members in developing interventions to be used, thus increasing the likelihood that the interventions would be implemented; and (3) reducing his challenging behavior and increasing his use of appropriate behaviors in both the home and school settings.
